2025 — Wetlands

During the wet season, wetlands work like nature’s sponge, slowing down and absorbing large amounts of water, then gradually releasing it during the dry months. Wetlands reduce droughts and floods, protect biodiversity, filter pollution out of streams, and sequester carbon (even more than forests!).  Just downstream from Renfrew Ravine, Still Creek flows through a narrow channel behind the big box stores, where it once spread out into abundant ponds and wetlands. This area around the Renfrew and Rupert skytrain stations is now being densified at the same time as extreme weather is becoming more frequent. It’s a perfect time to bring back our Still Creek wetlands to make us more climate resilient.

For over 20 years, the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival has honoured the harvest moon, Still Creek watershed, community, art and the diverse cultural traditions of Renfrew-Collingwood. The festival features enchanting live music, dance, and giant lanterns and illuminated art set against a backdrop of towering trees and the flowing waters of Still Creek.
