About
How do you create a dye garden? What does it take to maintain and process these special pigment plants. How can we use the colours that the plants produce? We explore these questions at our free monthly Gardeners’ Gatherings at the Colour-Me-Local Dye Garden which take place between April and September.
Attend a Gardeners’ Gathering to participate in maintaining and processing plants at the Colour-Me-Local Dye Garden. We will learn together, work together, and enjoy the beauty of the garden and surrounding Renfrew Ravine.

Gardeners’ Gathering Activities:
- Harvesting plants for drying
- Preparing plants for the dye vat
- Preparing pre-mordants and mordants
- Removing invasive species
- Weeding
- Watering
- Preparing materials for weaving
- Casual discussion and education around natural dye plants
On some of these sessions, we may bring a dye pot and fabric test strips so we can experiment with natural dyeing while we work!
Colour-Me-Local Dye Garden
The garden was built and planted by Still Moon Arts and community members in the Spring of 2019. The garden and the surrounding Renfrew Ravine provide plants we use in our eco-arts workshops and projects, and they also support Indigenous medicinal programs, and pollinators and birds.
Dyes are created using the roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants from the garden. These natural dyes create a range of vibrant colours which can be used for dyeing natural materials including cotton, linen, wool, and silk.
