Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival
The Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival celebrates the full moon, harvest abundance, and diverse cultural traditions. The festival highlights the arts, community, and environment, and is held on the Saturday closest to the 8th full moon of the year: the Harvest Moon. The festival was started in 2003 by Artistic Director Carmen Rosen, and continues every year as a co-production of Still Moon Arts Society and Renfrew Park Community Association. Surrounding the main festival day, there are multiple events and workshops throughout the month to build up excitement for the Moon Festival.
This family-friendly fair at Slocan Park marks the beginning of the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival. Attendees can play games, make crafts, enjoy performances by local musicians, eat delicious food, purchase last-minute lanterns, and engage with community organizations. The popular Harvest Fair competition allows neighbours to bring their best homegrown produce to win community prizes. Organized and run by the Still Moon Arts Youth Committee, the Harvest Fair is an exciting way to kick off the day’s festivities.
Twilight Lantern Walk
As the moon rises and the sun sets, musicians, dancers, and the giant moon lantern at Slocan Park prepare the way for the twilight lantern procession along Renfrew Ravine. Audiences are encouraged to join in, as the Harvest Fair comes to a close. The parade follows the trails along the ravine, accompanied by live music as darkness transforms the surroundings into a magical evening atmosphere. Passing by the river-stone labyrinth, the procession is invited to a walking meditation surrounded by music and light.
The parade crosses 22nd Avenue, leaves the streetlights, and descends into a transformed world of the stream, Still Creek, now lined with lights, floating lantern art, and ethereal music. Time slows down as community members pause to absorb the beauty of candlelight, exquisite lanterns, and the gently shimmering stream, all put together by local artists and volunteers. Just outside of the stream, you will find musicians playing at the main stage, the food service at the Tea Garden, and a mobile-friendly lantern walk for all to enjoy.
To conclude the evening, youth performers showcase a co-created choreographed performance with elements of dance, stilts, clowning, theatre, puppetry, and fire spinning at the Finale. The spectacle is accompanied by a live band and dancing, and the festival ends with an explosion of light.
