Art and Lantern Workshops

Bring your own beautiful lanterns to the Moon Festival by creating them at one or more of our workshops, under the guidance of experienced community artists. Some workshops require registration beforehand – please take careful note of the descriptions below. For other workshops, just show up at the door and you’re welcome to participate! For all workshops, please ensure that young children are accompanied by an adult helper. See our calendar for lantern workshop dates, or request a custom workshop for your community group or workplace. Lanterns may also be for sale at the festival.

Arduino Lantern Workshops

A new addition to this year’s lantern workshops – learn how to use Arduino to program an LED display, make a lantern to house your custom light show, and bring your creation to the Moon Festival as part of this 4-day workshop! Basic programming knowledge is recommended, and you must bring your own laptop with pre-installed apps. More details on the registration page.

Mooncake Workshops

Last year’s popular Mooncake Workshops are back! Learn the art of making this traditional delicacy that is enjoyed during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Participants will learn how to make lotus seed mooncakes and bring some samples home to try! Spots are limited, so be sure to RSVP soon.

Fire and Water Lantern Workshop

Explore two of the four elements of this year’s theme with these uniquely designed bamboo lanterns. Fire and Water are often seen as competing with each other, but this workshop will teach you how to create a design that unites them both in a harmonious way. Taught by local artist Yoko Tomita.

Mushroom Lantern Workshop

Mushrooms come from the Earth – an element that is reminiscent of life and fruitfulness. Learn how to make your own mushroom-shaped bamboo lantern at this workshop to show your love for the Earth! Taught by local artist Yoko Tomita.

Glass Jar Lantern Workshop

Glass Jar Lanterns require only a jar, paper, and some wire, meaning you can learn with us and continue creating at home! These hugely popular lanterns are simple and fun to make, and look beautiful when lit at the Moon Festival. Workshops taught by local artist Yoko Tomita.
