Gardeners’ Gatherings

About

How do you create a dye garden? What does it take to maintain and process these special pigment plants? Still Moon answers these questions at our bi-monthly Colour Me Local Dyers and Gardeners’ Gathering Work Parties. We are host regular gatherings from June – August to offer the community the opportunity to participate in the maintenance and processing of the Colour Me Local Dye Garden. We will learn together, work together and enjoy the beauty of the garden and surrounding Renfrew Ravine.

  • Preparing plants for the dye vat
  • Preparing pre-mordants and mordants

On some of these sessions, we may bring a dye pot and fabric test strips so we can experiment with natural dyeing while we work!

Colour Me Local Dye Garden

Still Moon’s Colour Me Local Dye Garden was installed and planted by Still Moon Arts and community members in the Spring of 2019. The Dye Garden and the surrounding Renfrew Ravine provide plants to use for these dye programs, in addition to supporting pollinators and Indigenous medicinal programs. Dyes are created using the roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants from the garden. These natural dyes create a range of vibrant colours which can be used for dyeing natural materials including cotton, linen, wool, and silk.
